1887 - A congressional act was passed giving the U.S. government power to seize and administer the property of the Mormon Church. The seized property was not returned until 1896 when the church renounced the practice of polygamy.
On this day in 1887, Anne Sullivan begins teaching six-year-old Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing after a severe illness at the age of 19 months. Under Sullivan's tutelage, including her pioneering "touch teaching" techniques, the previously uncontrollable Keller flourished, eventually graduating from college and becoming an international lecturer and activist. Sullivan, later dubbed "the miracle worker," remained Keller's interpreter and constant companion until the older woman's death in 1936.
1931 - President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official national anthem of the United States.
Psalm 62:5-6 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
The Official CCA Bad Joke of the Day
One day Trouble and his pal Mind Your Own Business were walking down the street. Trouble got lost and Mind Your Own Business went to look for him. Mind Your Own Business walked over to a policeman to ask for help. The policeman said, "What's your name?" He said, "Mind Your Own Business." The irritated policeman said, "Are you looking for trouble?" Mind Your Own Business replied, "How did you know?"
